Tantalis Digital Cadastral Data

Data Characteristics
Tantalis spatial data consists of a seamless fabric of current and historical survey data and Crown land tenure information (also called cadastral information) spanning the extent of British Columbia. It also includes several types of Administrative areas ( e.g. Land District, Regional District, Municipalities, etc.) relevant to land disposition. Tantalis spatial data was compiled using coordinate geometry and referenced to existing survey control and to the Terrain Resource Information Management (TRIM) geographical data available at the time of compilation. TRIM is generated from aerial photography and satellite positioning technology and it represents physical features such as roads, lakes, mountains, rivers, etc.

Specifications
Tantalis spatial data consists of features classes ( e.g. district lots, subdivisions, rights of way, etc.) with a small set of attributes which uniquely identify, name and codify each feature. The spatial data can be extracted from Tantalis by British Columbia Geographic System ( BCGS ) 1: 20 000 map tiles, National Topographic System ( NTS ) 1:250 000 map tiles and areas that are equivalent to an individual Administrative Area ( e.g. Regional District of Central Kootenay, City of Nanaimo, etc. ).

The choices of format for Tantalis spatial data extracts are ESRI Shape file, ESRI coverage export file ( E00 ) and simple DXF ( lines and text ) and the choices of coordinate systems are BC Albers, Universal Trans Mercator ( UTM ) and Geographic. Each of the coordinate systems is based upon the North American Datum 1983 ( NAD83 ) and the Geodetic Reference System 1980 spheroid ( GRS1980 ).

Tantalis spatial data is stored in an Oracle/SDE database using geographic coordinates.

 Is A Data Dictionary Available?

All feature datasets for an area of interest are extracted into a file of one of the supported formats. A feature dataset is a group of like features classes. For example, a feature dataset of “survey parcels” would include district lots, subdivisions and rights of way and a feature dataset of “interest parcels” would include leases, licenses and reserves. Each file created for a feature dataset is then added to a ZIP file along with a “readme.1st” file that briefly describes the contents of the ZIP file. The included “readme.1st” file only lists the data found within the selected area of interest. For a complete list of possible data, click on the following link.

SDE spatial layers in Tantalis have the following specifications:

  •  Coordinate system         geographic

  • Units                              decimal degrees

  • Datum                            Nad83

  • Spheroid                        GRS1980

  • Resolution                      67000000

  • False X                         -143.0

  • False Y                          47.0

Extent parameters -

  • Eminx                           -139.5

  • Eminy                            48.0

  • Emaxx                          -113.5

  • Emaxy                           60.5

A resolution of 67000000 yields an approximate precision of 1.65mm per unit

Metadata for Extracts of Tantalis Digital Cadastral Data.

 Disclaimer
The department has sought to maintain a degree of accuracy to within 10 meters +/- relative to the compiled corner locations, however, this data was complied from existing survey records, maps and plans from various sources. As such, the positional accuracy cannot be established from the digital coordinates. The corner locations and dimensions of the cadastral boundary information can only be established by field survey and the use of official plans.

Not Available at this time. See Tantalis Digital Cadastral Data for layer information on Extracts.

How Do I order Digital Cadastral Data?

Until an automated extract process is available, clients can order digital cadastral data by BCGS grid number via an Order Form and e-mail to orderdesk@gov.bc.ca  Clients will be required to sign a Digital Data Agreement prior to purchase and payment must be made in advance.  Current fee structure is $215.00 per BCGS grid, plus tax, if delivered by FTP.  Data provided by CD is an additional $15.00 for a total of $230.00 per BCGS grid, plus tax. (Taxes charged may be adjusted for out of province orders.)

A discount may be available upon request for orders of 100 mapsheets from a single complete NTS block (e.g. all 100 grids of 93H, in that 93H001 to 91H100 inclusive). Clients are advised to confirm discount in advance of payment. Discounts are not available for partial orders.

When ordering digital cadastral data, clients should specify the specific required BCGS grid numbers (e.g. 92B044).  Clients should also indicate which of the three available formats and three projections, is required, as well as delivery method.

The format and projection options available at this time are noted as follows;

 Formats

  • Shape Format (ArcVew) or

  • DXF Format (Autocad) or

  • E00 Format (ArcInfo)

Projections

  • Geographic Projection (geographic coordinates) or

  • BC Albers Projection (equal area projection) or

  • UTM Projection (orthogonal projection).

Copy the attached Order Form, add the required details then mail it or fax it to 250-952-4590. Ensure that you sign the appropriate "Digital Data Agreement form" and include it with your order.

Digital Data Agreement

Ensure that you and/or your company representative sign the "Digital Data Agreement". If you will be using the services of a contractor for data conversion or manipulation then this third party contractor are also required to sign the "Digital Data Agreement". E-mail the completed order and agreement to the above noted address  orderdesk@gov.bc.ca  or fax to 250-952-4590.
