Welcome
to the Ministry of Sustainable Resource Management in the
Cariboo Region
The Cariboo
Region is extremely diverse. It includes the dry grassland expanse
of the Chilcotin Plateau and the interior rainforest of the Cariboo
Mountains. The Cariboo is also home to a great range of fish and
wildlife species. They include California bighorn sheep that inhabit
the lower elevation near the Fraser River, and Mountain Caribou
that are found in the mountains to the east. The historic Horsefly
River provides spawning habitat for a large and important sockeye
salmon run.
The Cariboo
relies heavily on its natural resources: forestry, agriculture,
mining, and tourism are the mainstays of the region's economy. The
forest industry is the largest in the region, producing over 1.8
billion board feet of lumber annually and directly employing 4800
people.
The Ministry
of Sustainable Resource Management, Cariboo Region, has as its mission:
To provide timely and cost-effective leadership, co-ordination,
and support for land and resource planning and monitoring, and information
which support regional economic development opportunities while
ensuring environmental standards are addressed.
The Cariboo
is fortunate to have in place the Cariboo-Chilcotin Land Use Plan
(CCLUP), which is a "made-in-the-Cariboo" plan for balancing
social, environmental, and economic needs. The CCLUP guides the
Sustainable Resource Management Plans, or SRMPs, which are currently
underway or completed in each forest district in the region. Considerable
social, economic, and environmental security has been achieved as
a result of the CCLUP and the SRMPs.
